Tooth Decay has become more and more of a problem as of late. What many people don’t know is that tooth decay can actually create more and more problems over time and even eventually lead to cavities. How Does Tooth Decay Occur?
Tooth Decay forms over time. The first thing that we see in regard to cavities is that a plaque will form on the teeth. This will be a soft plaque and if it is allowed to stay on the teeth, it will harden up and produce acids that attack the teeth, causing cavities. Let’s take a look at three different ways that you can prevent tooth decay, on top of brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.
- Sugar Intake: Sugar intake is important to recognize when it comes to tooth decay. One of the things that directly affect how much plaque you have, is the amount of sugar and carbohydrates that you take into your body. These sugars are fermented by the bacteria in your mouth, which in turn, produces acids that eat away at your enamel. If this continues over a long period of time, then, unfortunately, a cavity will occur, which, if not taken care of, can lead to even worse tooth decay.
- Brushing After Meals: One thing that you can do in order to try and stop the culmination of plaque is brushing after meals. The 20 minutes after a meal is the most important time to brush, as this will stop bad bacteria from growing and spreading in your mouth.
- Rinse with Flouride: If you are at a high risk of developing cavities, your dentist may have you try using a mouthwash on top of regular cleanings and flossing. This fluoride can help to prevent plaque from growing and causing issues for you.
